FAQ
- Why?
- because. Because I hate my phone, or at least I hate what my phone makes me become. I hate deleting specific apps or disabling safari only to redownload it, I hate scrolling mindlessly through safari or obsessing over text messages. I hate being able to search anything up. I just cannot stand it. I wanted to have a more clever lenten challenge, like streaming or searching on the internet of previous years, but I feel like this is the most important one to me right now.
- Why aren't you giving up imessage anymore?
- Because I realized that not only is it an impediment to my friends family and loved ones, but I realized that I was just trying to extend the challenge and one up myself, trying to avoid like I was stagnant in my own goals of self improvement. I wrote more about my decision today at work, you can read it [here]
- What about apps you cannot delete?
- I believe photos is the only other app you cannot delete. I certainly tried to delete it, but I failed. So I guess screenshots are fair game this year? my friend zach keeps all the tempting apps sitting in the app library as an exercise in willpower but I like having my clean phone.
- um... okay... what about maps?
- See, during the first lent I was single and I only had to look up addresses on google maps a couple of times. Now if my girlfriend and I traverse the city in search for thrift stores and other delights we have google maps on our side. I am going to print out and try to memorize certain routes (and routes between) heavy traffic areas for us, but you know, if its between being lost and my girlfriend reluctantly pulling up google maps, I will save her the
heartache. Also DS has homebrew map software, which I probably wont use but wouldn't that be hilarious?
- How Christian are you going to be this Lent?
- Hopefully more christian than previous years. My own spiritual journey (cataloged on last years lent page, linked below) has been a minor amount of thinking, a minor amount of bible reading, a minor amount of reading about jewish holidays, and a zero amount of actually going to church. My friend and I have been saying we will go to an orthodox mass together for over a year at this point, but it never comes to fruition because its just so damn early. I will be trying to do a daily bible reading, hopefully more successfully, but I at least want to try and do a weekly study by myself with my big ass textbook. Perhaps on Saturdays because of work.
- Can you refresh me on the previous years?
- 2022: swearing
2023: Looking up information on the internet
2024: Lentphone (phone, messages, settings)
2025: streaming
Batten down the lenten hatches!
Welcome to lent 2026. Like all good lenten years, I have to think ahead regarding my preparations for the year to come. While this could sit in a document inside of notion, its much more entertaining to make a big deal out of it and put it on the internet. The list will be nested somewhere else when the challenge begins, or whatever. lots of work to do.
